The incidence of age spots, also known as “liver spots” or lentigos, is directly related to one’s age and sun exposure. In fact, in elderly populations, as many as 90% of individuals have age spots. They are found mostly on the hands, but also appear on the arms, neckline, forehead, cheeks, and other areas that have been exposed to the sun.
Treatments for Age Spots:
There are many approaches to diminishing or completely erasing age spots. For some time, age spots have been treated with bleaching agents or Retin A preparations. Although these formulas create varying degrees of positive response, one of the side effects that must be managed is that of irritation. Topical approaches to this condition require a long term commitment to treatment. With the emergence of new aesthetic technologies, age spots now are treated with PhotoFacial with AFT Pulsed Light, MicroLaserPeel™ or the MedLIte C6 Laser, resulting in a high degree of reduction. It may require several treatments in order to achieve cosmetic satisfaction. After resolution of this condition, it is very important to protect the skin with sunblock containing SPF30 or higher every day.
