Psoriasis
The National Institute of Health estimates that 7.5 million people suffer from Psoriasis, a chronic skin disease in which areas of the skin grow much faster than normal. The affected locations become inflamed and produce raised, red, thickened patches with silver scales. It is most commonly found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back but can develop in other locations of the body. In addition to the physical discomfort that may be associated with Psoriasis, individuals with this condition also may suffer emotionally from the visible appearance of the skin plaques that may cover large portions of an affected area.
The cause of Psoriasis is unknown, however, there is some indication that the underlying factor may be an abnormality in function of key white blood cells causing inflammation of the skin. In some cases it is activated by certain medications, stress and infections. It often becomes more pronounced in the wintertime as a result of dry skin.
The methods of treating this condition vary, depending on the severity of the disease as well as the age and health of the patient. The goal of treatment for Psoriasis is to reduce inflammation, slow rapid cell growth, and control itching.
Although psoriasis has been traditionally managed with medical approaches, new therapies are now being used to successfully and quickly improve the conditions caused by this disease. A series of XTRAC Velocity™ Laser treatments can result in remarkable degrees of reduction or elimination of the thickened patches on the skin.
